Al Innes (he/him) is the Research Development Manager at the University of Edinburgh, where he leads initiatives which advance interdisciplinary, complex and catalytic projects in Climate and Environment research. He joined the steering group of the Scottish Arctic Network (ScAN) in the Autumn of 2025, where he supports the network’s communications strategy and social media presence.
He studied History at the University of Edinburgh, before training as a journalist, and has worked in research development for over 15 years, both in the private sector and in Higher Education. He continues to write on the history of Arctic exploration, and as a theatre maker he is currently working on a play about the life of Dr. John Rae – he is also a member of the John Rae Society – the 19th C. Orcadian Arctic Explorer.
In his own words, Al shares:
“I am thrilled to be working with the Scottish Arctic Network and contribute in some small way to its vital work. The Arctic is a region at the forefront of climate change, and it’s essential that our responses are scientifically informed and culturally sensitive. I look forward to working with the ScAN’s inspiring team and extended community to make a meaningful impact.”
“We encourage all who are interested in Scotland and Arctic research to connect with the network. 2026 marks the start of an exciting new chapter for us. Whether you are a researcher, a student, or simply an enthusiast for environmental advocacy, there will be numerous opportunities to collaborate and learn via the Scottish Arctic Network – starting with our Scottish Arctic Conference and ScAN Annual Meeting in March.”
