I’m Beth Langley and for the past two years I’ve had the pleasure of serving as the Early Career Researcher (ECR) Representative on the ScAN Steering Committee.
I’m currently in the final stages of my PhD at the University of Glasgow, where my research focuses on carbon burial in Arctic marine sediments, with a particular emphasis on Arctic fjords. Using a combination of spatial modelling, geochemical analyses and molecular techniques, I investigate how carbon is distributed, stored and remineralised in these environments, and the key processes that control these dynamics in a rapidly changing Arctic.
My interest in the Arctic stems from a desire to explore remote environments and understand their role in the global climate system. During my first trip to the Arctic, I carried out fieldwork in fjords on the west coast of Greenland and was struck by the scale and beauty of the landscape. That experience strengthened my motivation to study how these systems function and respond to environmental change.
During my time on the ScAN committee, I’ve particularly enjoyed helping to ensure that ECRs are actively involved and well represented. ScAN has a highly engaged and supportive ECR community, and it’s been rewarding to contribute to that. As I step down from this role, I look forward to passing the baton and seeing ECR engagement continue to grow.
Beth’s position as ECR representative is open for applications.
